My experience was that thinking about doing it was way harder than actually doing it šŸ˜‚
To do it was as simple as filling out a form and submitting it at the courthouse along with my fee, showing up at my court date and affirming to the judge that Iā€™m not changing my name to hide from criminal charges or creditors and then waiting in line to get my official proof of name change forms.
Now, after the fact is, to me, where the real work is because youā€™ve got to notify every account youā€™ve got about this. Many (most?) will require an official court notice (but at least 5 of these when your name change is official), some will accept a xerox copy of the court form. In my state I needed to update social security BEFORE my drivers license - do these two first before anywhere else.
After youā€™ve got your new social security proof and drivers license go to your banks or credit unions and on from there.
I also carried my old driver license for months just in case I came across somewhere Iā€™d forgotten to update.
