In this Smart in Seconds, seven disability activists share a truth everyone needs to know about disability.

“Disability is part of human diversity.” -Spencer West

It is a truth universally known and even more so denied or ignored, that almost everyone will, at some point in life, be either temporarily or permanently disabled. Yet, ableism is running rampart through our cultures, harming everyone it touches.

Being disabled is simply one way to be a human.

“About 20–25% of the US population has a disability.” -Andrea Lausell

According to the CDC, 26% of people in the US are disabled.

“Disability is not just a diagnosis. It’s a lived experience.” -Imani Barbarin

“There is no single experience of disability.” -Annie Segarra
