9/11/2001 became a sort of wake-up call for me.

I’d been living small, tucked into a box, into more boxes within myself, trying to survive an abusive marriage. I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t inspired. I wasn’t safe.

Life wasn’t good.

9/11 made me realize I had a lot of unfinished ‘God business’ to work through, and it really made me realize how abruptly life can end.

One of the ways I coped was by attending a local progressive church — in search of community and support in my inner journey. It turned out not to be a lifelong fit — that first church — but it did turn out to have a lifelong impact because it was at that progressive church that I was blessed to hear don Miguel Ruiz speak in person about his book The Four Agreements.

I bought and read my first copy and continue to live by the principles he teaches in that book to this day.
